Job Opportunities

Cal-SOAP is always looking for talented, enthusiastic candidates to assist in its many ongoing projects.

Students in good academic standing currently attending area universities or community colleges that are interested in tutor, or college peer advisor (CPA) positions can contact Cal-SOAP through our website or use the more component specific email addresses listed below.

Available staff positions are posted at the UCSD Human Resources Website, via JobLink.

UCSD Student APPLICANTS

UCSD students can locate and apply to all Cal-SOAP student positions at the UCSD Career Services Web Site.

NON-UCSD Student APPLICANTS

If you are interested in Cal-SOAP student positions and you are a student enrolled in another community college or university you may inquire by sending an email cover letter and resume to the Cal-SOAP component programs listed below. We accept inquiries between August 15th & October 15th and December15th & January 31st of each year.

Advisement: soap-cpa@ucsd.edu
The Advisement Component provides college peer advising support for school counseling personnel at high schools in San Diego. College Peer Advisors (CPAs) assist with college and scholarship search, writing the college essay and understanding financial aid options.

AVID: soap-avid@ucsd.edu
This component works with the AVID program (Advancement Via Individual Determination) in local middle schools and high schools. Cal-SOAP places AVID tutors in 10 schools in the Poways District and 6 schools in the San Diego City Schools District. Tutors are trained in small group tutoring techniques to assist students in a variety of academic subjects. Tutors teach students better learning and study techniques, help them with academic subjects, ask questions instead of just giving answers, and inspire students to pursue a postsecondary education.

Transfer: Making it Happen!: soap-tmih@ucsd.edu
This component uses Transfer Peer Advisors (TPAs) to inform and assist high school students and their parents with community college and transfer opportunities. For inquiry in this component graduate students only please.

Community Resources: soap-crhv@ucsd.edu
The goal of the Community Resources component is to disseminate information about postsecondary education to students, parents and members of the community. Projects include home visits to students to discuss student goals, academic achievement, college options, and financial aid. Middle school classroom presentations and presentations to community groups are also frequently conducted by CR staff. Applicant must be highly motivated about education and possess strong interpersonal communication and writing skills. Bilingual ability is a plus. Graduate level student in education or counseling preferred, but not required.

Cal-SOAP also has a satellite office in the North County region that provides a mix of all Cal- SOAP services and employs Tutors and CPAs to work in the North County schools.

Reading and Math Tutors (Formerly America Reads): soap-ar@ucsd.edu
This component serves elementary students in the areas of literacy and math. Tutors work with a curriculum designed to inspire the child’s desire to prepare for college and encourage academic excellence at an early age.

Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs is dedicated to providing the combined services of Cal-SOAP to students through their academic experience. College Peer Advisors and Tutors work with students from 7th through 12th grade to assist in their preparation for undergraduate enrollment and studies.
